CSG implement Virtualisation & Networking project for a 24/7 Manufacturing client
Bar & Restaurant Foods are suppliers of soups, sauces and recipe dishes to the UK’s foodservice and manufacturing industries. Over the last 20 years they have become market experts and have a real understanding of the changing needs of the food industry.
As a 24/7 manufacturing business, the systems at Bar & Restaurant Foods must be kept operational even in the event of a hardware failure or when routine server maintenance is required. With the scope of the project there was a requirement to update the networking, both LAN & WLAN, to replace the ageing architecture and future proof the organisation. CSG therefore worked with the internal IT Manager to evaluate the existing systems and advise on suitable upgrades in technology.
CSG recommended a move to a leading virtualisation technology from VMWare and a private cloud infrastructure with advanced HP MSA 16GB fibre channel SAN storage and Storefabric 16GB Fibre switching technology. Not only would this provide much needed performance uplift to account for the proposed update of the ERP solution but ensure delivery of a robust and resilient infrastructure maintaining an "always on IT" approach.
CSG implemented 6 x HP Proliant performance host rack servers with VMWare VSphere software and Veeam Backup & Replication to protect the virtual environment from data loss. The compute resources specified will provide a large performance upgrade to the "terminal services" farm and MSA SAN built with a mixture of SSD and SAS discs for rapid data access across the network.
Networking upgrades were also performed for both LAN and WLAN. The various telecoms cabinets across the plant were connected via a 10GB fibre backbone. The switching gear provisioned was HP Procurve with a 5400 series modular chassis and Aruba 2900 series for the smaller cabinets. This delivered a large performance uplift through the 10GB data transfer backbone with gigabit and POE to each port. CSG implemented HP MSM wireless technology with a central contoller and a variation of HP MSM wireless access points. There was provision for specialised WiFi equipment to work in cold store temperatures of -40 degrees.
"CSG has enabled our business to save money on hardware provisioning costs, management time and ensure our systems are kept operational in the event of a hardware failure. CSG delivered the system against all project key objectives"
With continuous on-going support from CSG, the internal IT Manager now has the back-up of the CSG team as part of their Managed IT Support service. The network is monitored and managed on a 24/7 basis while the implementation of virtualisation and private cloud infrastructure allows Bar & Restaurant Foods to take advantage of quicker timeframes to deploy additional server resource.
Further benefits include an uplift in performance with the new and much improved architecture, robust networking design, cost savings on power consumption and the knowledge that the systems are fault tolerant and highly available.
