Virtualisation & Back Up - Disaster Recovery project for Ty Hafan HospiceVISIT SITE
With a heavy reliance upon the IT systems, applications, data and telephony it was crucial that the systems were kept operational in the event of a hardware failure, routine server maintenance or in a disaster scenario. The organisation required an improved method of systems backup and a realistic business continuity plan.
Due to increasing demands on the systems there were speed issues on the terminal server environment and a reliance on tape backup technology which would not guarantee quick recovery in the event failure / disaster.
CSG were requested to tender recommendations to improve on the existing systems, with disaster recovery being the key strategy to the overall project delivery.
CSG evaluated the existing systems and made recommendations for an uplift in technology. CSG recommended that Ty Hafan adopted MS HyperV virtualisation and a private cloud infrastructure with advanced SAN storage to ensure an "always on" approach to IT. Should any of the servers become unavailable, key services would not be affected within the fault tolerant private cloud array.
3 x high performance terminals servers would be implemented in a cluster and load balanced to share the workload and deliver a performance uplift to the organisations user base delivering email, MS Office and shared applications.
To deliver against the disaster recovery objectives, dedicated server resources are co-located within CSG’s tier 3 data centre in South Wales and using Veeam Backup, near continuous data replication ensures continuity of systems. Should a disaster occur users can seamlessly access the data centre servers without any loss of services.
The design of the data centre recovery system provides contingency of the IP telephony PBX through use of SIP trunks and a software based PBX. Should there be a failure or an outage, the line provider will forward all incoming calls to the predefined SIP trunks and employees access the system through a mixture of SIP handsets and softphones that are directly linked to the recovery system.
The project solution allowed TY Hafan to take advantage of an uplift in performance with the new faster architecture, greater storage flexibility and a comprehensive disaster recovery solution for the organisations critical data and voice services.
The main benefits to Ty Hafan are the cost savings made on hardware provisioning costs through virtualisation, ease of server expansion, enhanced user productivity and peace of mind knowing that the IT systems are protected by industry leading technology. Should the worst occur, such as a fire or flood, the disaster recovery systems are instantly accessible via the cloud, ensuring that staff continue to work as normal.
