Chip and PIN is the new, more secure way to pay with credit or debit cards in the UK.
Instead of using your signature to verify payments, you will be asked to enter a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) known only to you.
By 2005 most credit and debit transactions where a card holder has been issued with a chip and PIN card and is present during the transaction, will be authorised by the customer keying in a personal identification number (PIN) rather than signing a paper receipt.
The UK Chip and PIN Programme began a trial in Northampton which is the first phases of a national roll out due to be completed by December 2004. The key objective of the trial is to ensure education and communication among cardholders, retailers, banks and building societies is as effective as possible.From 1st January 2005, liability for fraud will shift towards any retailer or merchant who has not implemented chip and pin. Roll out will be gradual with all point of sale's being compliant by January 2005. What do I need to do to my current EPoS system in preparation for the migration to Chip and pin? If you have a PDQ machine independent from your PoS system for processing card transactions you do not have to do anything. The bank that supplied the PDQ will automatically update your machine to accept Chip and PIN cards. If you have an EPoS system with integrated card payment process facility incorporating a card reader you need to contact the original supplier of the system. Your system will have to be upgraded to include a PIN pad with integrated card reader and a software upgrade to communicate the information to your till system. Products
