AI regulation isn’t on its way, it’s already here

Written by Ricky Killa, Regional Sales Director, CSG Computer Services Ltd.

Over the past 12 months, I’ve had more conversations about AI than I’ve had in the previous five years combined. At first, those conversations were all about opportunity: productivity gains, automation, customer experience and how tools like Microsoft Copilot can change the way we work.

But recently, the conversation has shifted to a more technical approach, business leaders aren’t just asking “How do we use AI?” anymore. They’re asking something far more important:

“Are we using AI safely, responsibly, and in a way that won’t put us at risk?”

And that’s exactly where AI regulation comes in.

The EU AI act

The EU AI Act is the world’s first detailed legal framework for artificial intelligence, and while many see it as “just another regulation”, I see it as something much bigger as it is representing a shift in how AI is viewed:

  • From innovation to accountability
  • From experimentation to governance
  • From “nice to have” to business-critical compliance

Even for UK organisations, this matters. If your business:

  • Serves EU customers
  • Uses AI in customer-facing services
  • Uses AI in areas like HR, finance, or decision-making

…then you are likely already within scope. And here’s the key point I’m sharing with clients right now:

AI compliance isn’t something you deal with later, it’s something you build in from the start.

In many cases, AI adoption is moving faster than governance. I see organisations:

  • Deploying AI tools without understanding where data is going
  • Using generative AI without documenting how decisions are made
  • Automating processes without assessing risk levels

This creates a dangerous gap, because under the EU AI Act, businesses are expected to:

  • Classify their AI systems by risk: is it low risk, limited risk or high risk?
  • Document how AI is used by assessing what data does it rely on? How are outputs generated?
  • Be transparent with users, ask yourself, do your customers know when they’re interacting with AI?
  • Demonstrate governance and oversight, who is accountable when something goes wrong?
  • For many businesses, this level of visibility simply doesn’t exist yet

It’s easy to look at regulation as a burden. But the businesses I’m speaking to who are getting ahead of this aren’t treating it that way at all, they’re using it as an opportunity.

Because when you can confidently say:

  • “We understand our AI”
  • “We’ve classified the risks”
  • “We’ve built governance into our processes”

You don’t just become compliant…You become trusted. And now more than ever, in a world of zero trust, trust has moved beyond a competitive advantage, but a requirement.

If you want to explore how your business can:

  • Get ahead of AI regulation
  • Strengthen governance and security
  • Turn compliance into a competitive advantage
