UK problems with vulnerable DrayTek routers: what has happened and why?

MSP, Computer Services Group Ltd, provdes comments on DrayTek routers Monday 24th March 2025.

Several UK broadband ISPs, including ICUK and Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), reported an increase in internet disconnections among customers using DrayTek routers.

“The problem seems to be related to a “router vulnerability,” which denotes security weaknesses in router devices that could enable remote attackers to execute code or install hardware on them.” – Matthew Bater, Managing Director of CSG.

What’s happened?

  • Unusual increase in internet disconnections among customers to have DrayTek routers at home or in the office.
  • The sudden surge in disconnections has alarmed both consumers and ISPs, prompting immediate investigations to uncover the root cause.

Understanding the router vulnerability

The vulnerability appears to compromise the DrayTek routers’ stability and security, leading to frequent disconnections and potentially exposing users to further cybersecurity risks.

Given the critical role routers play in maintaining internet connectivity, this flaw has serious implications for both individual users and businesses relying on stable connections for daily operations.

Implications for users

For home users, the disconnections have disrupted daily activities, including streaming, online gaming, and remote working.

Business users, on the other hand, face even more severe consequences, such as interruptions in communication, loss of data and decreased productivity.

Given the critical role routers play in maintaining internet connectivity, this flaw has serious implications for both individual users and businesses relying on stable connections for daily operations.

Businesses must operate with a secure backup system for their Wi-Fi and internet connections, which CSG provides essential support for.

Recommendations

To overcome router vulnerabilities, CSG recommend the following steps:

  • Check for firmware updates: check that your router’s firmware is up to date to patch any security flaws.
  • Reset the routers: perform a reset to clear any potential malicious configurations.
  • Replace vulnerable devices: if necessary, customers can get in touch with CSG to replace older or insecure routers with more secure alternatives.

These crucial steps can help enhance the security of your network and protect against potential threats.

The ongoing issue with DrayTek router vulnerabilities underscores the importance of maintaining up to date hardware and software to safeguard against potential threats.

“ISP responses and user vigilance will be crucial in mitigating the impacts of these vulnerabilities while ensuring a stable and secure internet experience for all.” – Matthew Bater, managing director at CSG.
