From the 27th May 2025, the ‘Remote Desktop Services (RDS) will no longer be available from download. Access will need to transition to the new Windows App so you can stay connected to your remote resources via AVD, Windows 365 and Microsoft Dev Box.
Please note: if you use the remote desktop then you will continue to receive security updates until end of support, after which it will no longer be available for download.

Microsoft has reported that they are ‘working to ensure the Windows App reaches feature parity with the remote desktop client for Windows to ease this migration.’ The CSG team are on hand to provide further support for your business to prepare for the end of support.
There will be several improvements for you when you move across to the Windows App, including:
- Consistent experience across platforms to connect to multiple Windows services, including Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box
- Customisable home screens, multimonitor support and dynamic display resolutions
- Enhanced remote work experience with features such as device redirection, Microsoft Teams optimisations and ease of account switching
To prepare for the migration to Windows App and avoid losing access to remote resources by March 27, 2026, it’s suggested that you should begin transitioning now.
We can support you with:
- Reviewing the Windows App setup guide and admin documentation
- Downloading the app from the Microsoft Store or as an MSIX package
- Checking the known issues and limitations
Once you are fully transitioned to Windows App, the legacy Remote Desktop client can be uninstalled using the appropriate app management methods.
