CSG presents at “Building Risk Resilience for SMEs” event

CSG was proud to support the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL) at Swansea University during the “Building Risk Resilience for SMEs: Insurance & Other Risk Mitigation Tools” event, held at Swansea.com Stadium.

The event brought together a wide range of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for dedicated 1-on-1 sessions with representatives from IISTL, Direct Line Group, and Computer Services Group (CSG). The focus was on helping businesses understand how to strengthen their cybersecurity posture to improve insurability and reduce financial risk.

Today was focused and designed in response to the growing need for SMEs to better understand the intersection between cybersecurity and financial resilience. With cyber threats becoming more sophisticated and insurers tightening their requirements, many SMEs face challenges in securing coverage or recovering from incidents. The event aimed to bridge this knowledge gap by offering practical, expert-led guidance on how to implement effective risk mitigation strategies that align with insurer expectations.

For those who couldn’t join us, here is a quick summary of the points we covered:

Proactive cyber security measures for financial risk mitigation

1. Managed detection and response (MDR)
MDR provides 24/7 monitoring, threat detection and incident response. For SMEs, this means having a dedicated team of cyber security experts who can identify and neutralise threats before they cause significant damage. MDR is a cost-effective way to gain enterprise-level protection without the need for in-house security teams.

2. Extended detection and response (XDR)
XDR builds on MDR by integrating data across endpoints, networks, servers and cloud environments. This holistic approach enables faster threat correlation and response, reducing the time attackers have to exploit vulnerabilities. For SMEs, XDR offers a unified view of their security landscape, making it easier to manage and defend.

3. Cyber essentials certification
Achieving Cyber Essentials certification demonstrates that a business has taken key steps to protect itself from common cyber threats. It’s often a prerequisite for securing government contracts and can lead to lower insurance premiums. CSG supports clients through the certification process, ensuring compliance and readiness.

4. Real-time threat detection and backup solutions
Real-time threat detection tools identify suspicious activity as it happens, allowing for immediate action. Coupled with robust backup and disaster recovery solutions, businesses can quickly recover from ransomware attacks, data breaches or system failures. CSG provides backup strategies that are structured to fit your business’ set up, helping ensure business continuity and data integrity.

Supporting SMEs with resilience and readiness

CSG’s participation in the event highlighted the importance of a layered cybersecurity strategy. By combining MDR, EDR, XDR, and backup solutions, SMEs can significantly reduce their exposure to cyber threats and improve their standing with insurers.

At the core of CSG’s offering is our ability to support businesses with their entire IT infrastructure, from endpoint protection and network security to cloud services and compliance frameworks. A well-managed and secure IT environment is not only essential for operational efficiency, but also a key factor in appealing to insurance providers.

By reducing endpoint vulnerabilities and implementing a cohesive, layered security strategy, businesses demonstrate a proactive approach to risk management. CSG’s infrastructure solutions are designed to align with insurer expectations, offering proven protection against cyber threats and helping organisations qualify for better coverage and lower premiums.

A word from the organiser

Professor Baris Soyer, Director of the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law, commented:

“We were delighted to welcome CSG to today’s event. Eve and the team provided invaluable insights into how SMEs can build cyber resilience and meet the expectations of insurers.
