CSG donate an Apple iPad to aid Claire in her quest to raise £45,000 for a life changing operation. Here is Claire's story and challenge.
Hello everybody, my name is Claire Beynon. I am 10 years old and I live in Middleton near Rhosilli. I hope you can take the time to read my story. I was born 10 weeks early on the 11th January 2003 and spent a small time in special care. My parents were told I had Cerebral Palsy when I was 10 months old, they had noticed I wasn’t doing the same things as my twin brother.
Cerebral Palsy affects everyone differently. For me it means my knees turn inward and I have difficulty with co-ordination and balance. Walking can be very difficult. I have daily physiotherapy to stretch my muscles which helps prevent me from getting deformities.
The reason for my story is I have a fantastic opportunity for a life changing operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy. It’s a neurosurgical procedure where an incision is made into the lower back to expose the spinal cord and problematic nerve roots are then selectively destroyed.
We have chosen to go to St Louis Children’s Hospital where its chief neurosurgeon, Dr TS Park, has completed thousands of SDR operations.
After the operation I hope to be able to do the things other children take for granted. Having the operation would mean my family wouldn’t have to worry about my future anymore.
