It has been two years since Microsoft announced they would no longer develop new features and hardware for Windows 10 Mobile, and now they have announced that as of 10th December, 2019, devices will cease to be supported.

The end of support isn’t really a surprise to those in the industry as the Windows Phone has been dying a death for years. It’s just taken a lot longer than other tech. Microsoft is now encouraging users to switch to supported Android or iOS devices, as it works to create compatible apps for other operating systems instead.

You will still be able to use your Nokia or Microsoft Lumia devices after the end date, but don’t bet on it remaining stable for long. You will lose security updates, non-security hotfixes, online technical content updates and assisted support options. It is also worth noting that Lumia 640 and 640XL operating on Windows 10 Mobile version 1703 will lose support on 11th June, 2019. Both end dates also apply to consumers and businesses alike.

If you think you will still be using your device after the end of support date, it is strongly advised that you manually backup your phone so as not to lose any important data, and then start the hunt for a new phone. Most Microsoft apps are available on alternative devices, so if you are quite attached to your Windows Phone, at least you know you will still have access to them.
